UK local elections

Last Thursday UK local elections took place, resulting in that the Liberal Democrats (Lib Dems), one of the coalition parties, lost their chairs significantly while the opposition party, the Labour, did make great slides (From online news).

They say this is because the Lib Dems withdrew a large part of their manifesto and vigorously pushed forward the way of increasing the burden on citizens such as education fee in tune with the Conservative’s claims, causing huge complaints of their audience. Besides, the Lib Dems also could not get support for their proposal to amend UK national election system but this is also because of such complaints and inappropriate timing of asking this less politically prioritised issue compared to the other more outstanding problems (as their proposal itself is not so bad). This implies that once a party’s manifesto is issued, politicians in this party had better stick to it with taking their political responsibility. Do you think Japanese party’s manifesto is as ponderable and important and as a UK’s one?

Likewise, the election for the York council took place on the same day and the Lib-Dems lost their chairs which were robbed by the Labour (from local newspaper). The Lib Dem actually appealed their achievements such as increase in the recycle rate of the household waste from 11% to 43% by distributing separate boxes to each home last year, which should not matter for angry UK voters.

On a side note, Japanese residents don’t have voting right as expected. On the other hand, dwellers coming from the other Commonwealth nations can vote for UK elections despite of their non-UK nationalities. Actually many people came to see "their" royal wedding from Australia, Canada etc etc - yeah, this relationship is still something special.
